Maharashtra government is starting an initiative called ‘Read Maharashtra’ with the focus of inculcating the habit of reading in the students of public schools in the state.

The initiative will run in all state government primary schools from the next academic year.

The initiative will be in line with the Union government’s ‘’Padhe Bharat’ campaign. The National Education Policy 2020 has stressed the importance of reading habit for children by making age- appropriate reading books available for children in the mother tongue, besides local, regional and tribal languages. The Padhe Bharat focuses on children from nursery to std VIII.

School education minister said that the libraries will be refurbished and a full time librarian will be appointed wherever needed. He said that if the habit of reading is inculcated at an early age would provide a conducive learning environment for children.

The authorities are identifying librarians who will be shifted to schools that need them. A proposal has been sent to the finance department.

The authorities are planning to design an activity per week per group to make reading enjoyable and help build a lifelong association.
