CFA Society St Louis Announces Winners of
University Investment Research Challenge 2022-23
(St Louis, MO) – February 18, 2023: CFA Society St. Louis (CFA STL) announced that a college team from Washington University (WU) placed first at the local round of their annual CFA University Research Challenge at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Clayton on February 17. In total, five college teams competed from Washington University, Saint Louis University, and SIU-Carbondale.
The winning WU team consisted of Samuel Berger, Sam Guo, Teja Sunkari, Ulrica Wu and Lillian Zhao. WU Professor Dr. Charles Cuny served as Faculty Advisor for the winning team.
Society member Eli Lustgarten, CFA, served as Industry Mentor for the team. Lustgarten is President at ESL Consultants, providing independent research of industrial markets for the investment community. He is a frequent guest on CNBC financial programs and is often quoted in the financial media including the Wall Street Journal, Reuters and Bloomberg.
Each year, participating St. Louis colleges & universities assemble teams of three to five students and assign them to analyze a publicly traded company. Students then prepare a written report on their assigned company recommending whether to buy, sell or hold the stock. Teams present their findings to a panel of industry experts, and winners are selected based on the students’ knowledge and equity analysis.
Since the CFA University Research Challenge 2022-23 competition kicked off in October, the University Research Challenge teams have been analyzing Benson-Hill, a plant-growing tech firm headquartered in St. Louis.
Students also received support in the competition from industry professionals Tom Eidelman, CFA, President of Daytona Street Capital; Aaron Goeckner, CFA, Research Analyst at Semper Augustus Investments Group; Jennifer Rowland, CFA, Executive Director, Head of Credit Research at Aetna; and Matt Arnold, CFA, Equity Analyst at Edward Jones.
According to the CFA Institute, more than 5,000 students and 900 universities from across the globe participated in the challenge in 2022. In addition to the practical experience in equity research students receive from the competition, events are a great opportunity for students to network with industry professionals and peers from other universities.
The winning team will advance to the regional round, with a chance to move on to the global final in New York City in May. Details for the regional round have not yet been announced.
