Pune: RSS pays tribute to worker killed in communal attack in 1982 – The Indian Express

FAMILY MEMBERS and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists on Wednesday remembered ‘Hutatma’ Shrikant Lingayat on the occasion of his death anniversary in Pune.
A member of the RSS, Shrikant was injured during the communal violence in the Pune Camp area on January 26, 1982. He was then admitted to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on March 15, 1982. A resident of Solapur Bazaar in Pune Camp, Lingayat was 26-year-old at the time of his death. Pune city police had arrested a group of people for their alleged role in his murder. But the accused persons were acquitted by the court due to lack of evidence.
Meanwhile, supporters and family members of Shrikant raised a ‘Hutatma Shrikant Lingayat Smruti Stambh’, a memorial, in his name at the Bhopale Chowk in Pune Camp, a couple of years after his death.
Since then, every year on March 15, Lingayat’s family, friends and activists of RSS and other Hindutva groups gather at the ‘Smruti Stambh’ for paying tributes to him. Accordingly, a small programme to remember Shrikant was held on Wednesday morning at his memorial. Advocate Prashant Yadav, a senior RSS functionary, delivered a speech on the occasion.
Chandrakant Lingayat, younger brother of Shrikant Lingayat, was among those present at the gathering. “My brother Shrikant was an active RSS worker. He was also a member of Patit Pawan Sanghatna (PPS). He was very good in studies and had appeared for examinations for chartered accountant (CA). He was killed in a cowardly communal attack in 1982. He will be remembered always,” Chandrakant told The Indian Express.
PMC had named a road in Wanavdi area of Pune city after Shrikant Lingayat a few years ago.
