CA ‘dies by suicide’ in Igatpuri resort weeks after he was booked in a case in Mumbai – The Indian Express

A Mumbai-based chartered accountant allegedly died by suicide at a bungalow in Igatpuri on Sunday night. The police said deceased, Chirag Varaiya (45), was booked by the Bhandup police nearly three weeks ago in a case.
The police suspect he was stressed due to the FIR, which may have provoked him to take the extreme step. A suicide note has been recovered, the police said.
An officer from Igatpuri police said, “On Friday, Varaiya told his employer that he wanted to relax over the weekend and requested a company car and driver, which were provided. He went to Vivaant bungalows (a chain of luxury bungalows) in Igatpuri alone.”
“On Saturday, he told the driver that they would leave for the city on Monday and asked him not to disturb him till then. When the driver went to his room to pick him up on Monday morning, there was no response. The driver then called Varaiya on his cellphone but found it switched off,” the officer added.
The police said the driver informed the resort owners who contacted the Igatpuri police. A team led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Ramdas Jadhav reached the spot, broke open the door and found Varaiya hanging from the ceiling fan.
The police said they found a suicide note written in English in which Varaiya had apologised to his family and asked his wife to take care of their children.
The officer said that last month, an FIR had been registered against Varaiya at the Bhandup police station. Bhandup police Senior Inspector Nitin Unhavne confirmed that a case had been registered against Varaiya three weeks ago and he had been called for questioning. Unhavne, however, refused to reveal the nature of the case.
An officer from Igatpuri police said they are in the process of recording statements. “We will also record the statement of Bhandup police officers, who had questioned Varaiya. So far, an accidental death report has been lodged.”
Chirag was the founder of a firm of chartered accountants, called ‘Chirag Varaiya & Co’, operating out of Mulund. Its website stated that Varaiya was the president, treasurer and an active member of Business Network International.
