Huw Pill, Chief Economist for the Bank of England, will headline an insightful plenary session, led by ICAEW’s Iain Wright and expert panellists, providing an update on the UK economy.
The panel will present the Business Confidence Monitor findings, discuss the key themes and consider what the future holds for UK businesses.
Delegates will be invited to pose questions to Huw and other panellists during this session.
Our 11 break-out sessions, encompassing all UK regions and the devolved nations, will focus on the Business Confidence Monitor™ regional findings and consider how the regional landscape compares to the national picture.
Expert panels of regional business leaders will explore the local impact of economic conditions, how their businesses have adapted to recent events and challenges – such as supply chain management, procurement, staffing, transportation, and inflationary pressure – and where they believe the true opportunities lie for the regional economy, its industry sectors, infrastructure, and businesses as we look to 2023 and beyond.
Huw Pill is the Bank of England’s Chief Economist and Executive Director for Monetary Analysis and Research. He is a member of the Monetary Policy Committee and is responsible for the analysis the Bank use to make their monetary policy decisions. He also leads the research that supports all our other functions. Previously, Huw was Chief European Economist at Goldman Sachs (2011-18). Before that, he worked at the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. He served as its Deputy Director of Research (2009-11) and Head of its Monetary Policy Stance Division (2004-09), also working in its Strategic Policy Issues Unit (1998-01). Huw was also a member of the faculty at Harvard Business School (1995-98, 2001-04, 2019-21). At the start of his career, he worked as an economist in the Bank of England’s then Economics Division (1990-92). He has a BA (Hons) from the University of Oxford and an MA and PhD from Stanford University.

Tom is a Chartered Certified Accountant and a Licensed Insolvency Practitioner who commenced his career working at a leading firm of insolvency practitioners in central London before co-founding Bailey Ahmad Business Recovery in January 2007. Tom has worked on a wide range of corporate assignments, with a focus on owner-managed and sole trader businesses. He also has experience dealing with the estates of insolvent individuals and assisting the effective implementation of Voluntary Arrangements between companies/individuals and their creditors.
Alex is a Partner at CK, a firm of Chartered Accountants and Business Advisers based in the Black Country. Alex works with a wide range of clients across the Midlands, including owner managed SME’s and education sector. Alex launched the Black Country Professionals Network with the aim of bringing a range of professionals together from across the region to develop both new and existing relationships. Alex is a Governor of Malvern St James Girls’ School where she is Chair of the Finance Committee.
David is the Director of Strategic Partnerships for the University of Edinburgh, having retired from being a Partner at PwC, where he was the Lead Partner in Scotland for Government and Public Sector. David has extensive advisory experience in the public sector and financial services industries specialising in strategy and large-scale transformations. He has been extensively in involved in pension reform and paying for Long Term Care; he was a member of the Dilnot Implementation Working Group and the Extended Working Lives Working Group. David has a number of external roles including: Trustee Board member for NCUB; member of the CBI Scotland advisory panel; and Board Member of the Converge Challenge.
Neil has been a Director of the Schwing Stetter (UK), a company that supplies concrete placement equipment to the UK construction sector, for the past 16 year. Prior to that, he had various finance roles in UK PLC’s in the construction and electronics sectors. He originally trained with Deloitte and is a member of the ICAEW, acting as President of the ICAEW (SE) in 2021/22. He is interested in the positive impact of sport on young people’s outcomes and is Chair of Reading Football Club Community Trust.
Yvonne joined NEL Fund Managers in 2002. She is responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of all teams within the organisation. Her role also involves sourcing funds for management, fund design, achieving maximised returns and impact for investors, and investor relations. Yvonne’s area of research is investment decision making. She is also a member of the Advisory and Decision Committee for the UAE Ministry of Finance-backed, Mohammed bin Rashid AED 2 billion Innovation Fund.
Bernard is a Director in KPMG and leads their Managed Solutions business in Northern Ireland, which provides tailored solutions utilising people, process and technology, in response to client challenges. He has over 25 years' experience in Statutory Audit, Internal Audit, Risk & Governance, across a wide range of sectors, including Energy & Utilities, Financial Services, Healthcare, Retail, Leisure and the Public Sector in Northern Ireland
Sir Roger Marsh OBE, DL chairs the NP11 which brings together the 11 Northern LEPs to work with the Northern Powerhouse Minister to support the Government’s vision for the Northern Powerhouse. Before joining the LEP, Sir Roger was Senior Partner at PwC and boasts nearly 40 years’ experience in the private sector. In 2015, he was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for Services to Business and the Economy and in 2019 became a Deputy Lieutenant. He is Chair of The Piece Hall Trust and a Member of Council of the University of Leeds. In the 2021 Queens Birthday Honours Announcements, Roger was made a Knights Batchelor for services to Business, to the Economy, and the community in Northern England.
Ian became Director CBI Wales in January 2017. Ian’s role involves him being the main link between CBI members in Wales and Welsh and UK Government, he sits on the Social Partnership Council with the First Minister for Wales, he is the voice of business on the group which meets fortnightly. Ian also engages with key stakeholders in Wales including the Secretary of State for Wales on regular basis, in his role he meets with business from all sectors in Wales and can provide an extensive and detailed view of the business intelligence.
Headquartered in Stockport, musicMagpie is a leader of re-commerce in the UK and US in the circular economy of consumer technology (including smartphones, tablets, consoles and wearables), books and disc media. Since its inception, musicMagpie has had sustainability as a core principle; smart for the consumer and smart for the planet, a message encapsulated by its recent installation of #MountRecyclemore at the G7 conference, highlighting awareness of the growing problem of e-waste. Ian was previously the Chief Financial Officer of the business, a role he held for six years, and became Chief Operating Officer on its successful admission to AIM on public listing in April 2021. Ian is a Chartered Accountant, having qualified with Deloitte, and a member of the ICAEW.
James is a Partner at Aben Capital – advising real estate developers, owners and investors on funding solutions and institutional exits. Prior to this he was the Investment Director for Babson Capital’s £15bn High Yield investment Funds. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 2004 and lives in Dorset with his wife and 3 children.
Qun is a fellow of the ICAEW, and is also a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Financial Risk Manager (FRM). Qun started her professional career as an auditor with Deloitte and later working for Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank, and has worked in the UK for 2 decades, Qun is passionate in her support of the UK Chinese community, with a particular focus on raising the profile and social impact of women. She established the UK Chinese Women Connect Association and is elected as the first chairwoman.
